Dining table size calculator

How many people fit around a table, and does it fit your room with the chairs pulled out?

How many people?

6

Table shape

Six people need a 180 × 90 cm table.

That's about 60 cm of table edge each: two on each long side and one at each end. Allow a room of at least 3.6 × 2.7 m, so the chairs can pull out with 90 cm between the table and the walls.

The short answer

Give each person about 60 cm (24 in) of table edge and the table sizes itself: 120 × 80 cm (48 × 32 in) for four, 180 × 90 cm (72 × 36 in) for six, 240 × 100 cm (96 × 40 in) for eight. A round table seats the same people on a smaller top, because nobody sits in a corner: 120 cm (48 in) across for six, 160 cm (66 in) for eight.

Whether it fits your room is a second question. The usual rule of thumb is about 90 cm (36 in) from the table's edge to the wall, so a chair can pull out and someone can still walk behind it; 75 cm (30 in) is the least that lets you sit down at all. This calculator does that arithmetic and shows the table and its chairs in a 3D room, so you can see the proportions and not only the numbers.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Say how many people

Count the people who eat together most days, not the once-a-year crowd. An extra seat or two for guests is cheap; a table that's too big every day isn't.

  2. 2

    Pick a shape

Rectangular tables use a long room best, round ones suit a square room and small groups, square ones seat four to eight face to face.

  3. 3

    Check your room

Tick "Check it fits my room" and type the room's size. The answer says what's left between the table and the walls with the chairs pulled out, and the room shows it. Switch to the top view to check the gaps, and to feet and inches if you prefer.

Questions

What size dining table do I need for 6 people?

A rectangular table of about 180 × 90 cm (72 × 36 in): two on each long side and one at each end, each with about 60 cm (24 in) of table edge. A round table for six is about 120 cm (48 in) across. Eight need about 240 × 100 cm (96 × 40 in), or a round top of 160 cm (66 in).

How much space do I need around a dining table?

About 90 cm (36 in) from the table's edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture. That's room for a pulled-out chair and someone walking behind it. 75 cm (30 in) still lets you pull a chair out and sit, but nobody passes behind you. These are rules of thumb; measure your own chairs if they're unusually deep.

Round or rectangular?

Round tables seat the same number on a smaller top and feel more sociable, because everyone faces everyone, but above eight people the middle is out of reach. Rectangular tables make better use of a long room and extend more easily. A square table seats four to eight comfortably and suits a square room.

Does the calculator allow for the chairs?

Yes. The 3D room shows a chair for each person pulled out to sit down, and the clearance is measured from the table's edge to the wall, which is what the 90 cm (36 in) rule of thumb means. Deep armchairs or a bench against the wall change the picture; measure those yourself.

What about an extending table?

Check both sizes: the everyday size for the room you live in, and the extended size for the number of guests it should seat. A table that only fits when it's extended will stand in the way the rest of the year.

Can I check it in my actual floor plan?

Yes. Upload your floor plan and UploadFloorplan turns it into a 3D room with all its walls, doors and windows. Then drag in a dining table and chairs, try it along the window, try it across the room, and see what fits. A free account is enough.
