The short answer
A room's floor area is its length times its width, measured between the inside faces of its walls. For an L-shaped or angled room, it's the sum of the rectangles and triangles it splits into. This calculator reads your floor plan, finds every room and works out each one's floor area, then adds them up.
It uses the written dimensions, the scale bar and any areas printed on the plan to get the size right, then measures each room inside its walls (the net floor area: what you'd cover with flooring). Reading a drawing isn't perfect, so check the numbers against the ones on your plan, and if one is off, type the right area and the total follows.
How to use it
- 1
Upload your floor plan
A photo, a screenshot or a PDF of the plan works. Plans with written dimensions or a scale bar give the most accurate areas.
- 2
Read the areas
Every room gets its floor area, and the total sits on top. Tap a room in the list or on the plan to see which one it is.
- 3
Correct and switch units
If a room is off, tap its area and type the right one. Switch between square metres and square feet at any time.
Questions
How do I calculate the area of a room from a floor plan?
Multiply the room's length by its width, using the inside dimensions between the walls. Split an L-shaped room into rectangles, work out each one and add them up. If the plan has a scale instead of dimensions (1:100 means 1 cm on paper is 1 m in the room), measure on the paper and multiply. This calculator does all of that for every room at once.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply square metres by 10.764 to get square feet, or divide square feet by 10.764 to get square metres. A 20 m² room is about 215 sq ft. The m² | sq ft switch above converts every room and the total.
Are walls included in the area?
No. Each room is measured inside its walls, which is the net floor area: what you'd cover with flooring. The gross area of a home, which some listings use, also counts the walls and is usually 5 to 10% larger.
How accurate is it?
As accurate as the plan allows. With written dimensions or a scale bar, areas usually land close to the ones on the plan; a sketch without any measurements can only be estimated. Always check against your plan, and correct any room that's off. For buying flooring, add the usual 5 to 10% for cutting waste.
Do I need an account?
No. Upload a plan and you get the areas, free and without signing up. There's a daily limit on how many plans can be read for free, for everyone together and per visitor.
What happens to my floor plan?
It's sent to the AI model that reads it, and this tool doesn't store it: you get the rooms and areas back, and that's it. To keep a plan, and furnish it in 3D, upload it to UploadFloorplan with a free account.
Now try it in your real room
Upload your floor plan and UploadFloorplan turns it into a 3D room with its walls, doors and windows. Drag the furniture in and see what fits where.
