Good size

A 65-inch TV is 144 cm wide and 81 cm tall.

At 2.5 m it fills 32° of your view, inside the 30° to 40° THX and SMPTE guidance recommends for a cinema-like picture. From 2.5 m, anything from 61 to 82 inches works.

The short answer

A TV's size is its diagonal, corner to corner, in inches. With today's 16:9 screens the width is about 87% of that and the height about 49%: a 65-inch TV is about 144 cm (56.7 in) wide and 81 cm (31.9 in) tall, screen only. The frame adds a centimetre or two each side.

Whether that is the right size depends on how far away you sit. The usual guidance comes from the cinema: SMPTE puts a cinema-like picture at a screen filling 30° or more of your view, THX recommends about 36° and treats 40° as the closest comfortable seat. In plain numbers, that is a diagonal between 0.6 and 0.85 times your viewing distance, or a seat 1.2 to 1.6 times the diagonal away. This calculator does that arithmetic and hangs the TV on the wall of a 3D room with a sofa at your distance, so you can judge the size and not only the numbers.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Pick a screen size

Tap one of the common sizes, or type the diagonal from the product page. The width and height come at once, in centimetres or inches.

  2. 2

    Add your viewing distance

Measure from the wall the TV goes on to where your head is on the sofa. The answer says whether the size suits it and which sizes do.

  3. 3

Look at it on the wall

The room shows the TV at that size above a media unit, with a sofa at your distance for scale. Open More options to set your wall's width.

Questions

How wide is a 65-inch TV?

About 144 cm (56.7 in) wide and 81 cm (31.9 in) tall for the screen itself, since the 65 inches is the diagonal. For comparison: a 43-inch screen is about 95 × 54 cm, a 55-inch 122 × 68 cm, a 75-inch 166 × 93 cm and an 85-inch 188 × 106 cm. Check the product page for the outer size with the frame, and the height with the feet if it stands on a unit.

What size TV should I get for my viewing distance?

The calculator uses the cinema guidance: the screen should fill 30° to 40° of your view (SMPTE's 30° minimum, THX's 36° recommendation and 40° closest seat). That means a diagonal between 0.6 and 0.85 times the distance: about 61 to 82 inches from 2.5 m (8 ft), 49 to 65 inches from 2 m (6½ ft), 73 to 98 inches from 3 m (10 ft). Anything smaller still works for everyday viewing; it just feels less like a cinema.

Does 4K change the answer?

A little. On a 4K screen you can sit closer without seeing the pixels, about 1 to 1.5 times the diagonal away, so the viewing angle, not the resolution, is what limits the size in most living rooms. With an older 1080p screen, stay nearer 1.6 times the diagonal so the picture stays sharp.

How far should I sit from the TV, and how high should it be?

The sweet spot for a 65-inch screen is about 2 to 2.7 m (6½ to 9 ft) away, with the middle of the screen roughly at eye level when seated, about 100 to 120 cm (40 to 47 in) above the floor. The TV distance and height calculator on this site works both out for your screen and your sofa.

Will it fit on my wall?

Type your wall's width under More options and the room redraws with the TV on it. Leave room for the mount's bracket and for the cables, and if the TV stands on a unit, make sure the unit is at least as wide as the feet. Most feet sit near the ends of the screen, so a 65-inch TV wants a unit of about 130 cm (51 in) or more.

Can I see it in my own room?

Yes. Upload your floor plan and UploadFloorplan turns it into a 3D room with its walls, doors and windows. Then hang the wall TV from the furniture library on any wall at any size, put your sofa where it stands, and look at it from the seat. A free account is enough.
