The short answer
A room's size is its length times its width: a 12 × 12 ft room is 144 sq ft (about 13.4 m²), and a 3 × 4 m room is 12 m² (about 129 sq ft). The number alone doesn't tell you much, so this tool furnishes the room for you: pick bedroom, living room, dining room or home office and see what fits, drawn to scale in 3D.
What fits follows the usual rules of thumb: about 60 cm (2 ft) to walk past a bed or a sofa, 75 cm (2½ ft) to do it comfortably, and about 90 cm (3 ft) behind a chair at a table so someone can get by. A 12 × 12 ft bedroom takes a queen bed with two nightstands and a wardrobe; a 3 × 3 m one takes a double bed with little else. Change the size and the room updates as you type.

How big is a 12 × 12 room?
144 square feet, or about 13.4 square metres. As a bedroom that takes a queen bed, two nightstands and a wardrobe with room to walk around the bed. As a living room, a three-seat sofa, a coffee table and a TV unit; as a dining room, a table for six.
How many square feet is a 10 × 10 room?
100 square feet, about 9.3 square metres. It's a small bedroom: a queen bed and two nightstands fit, but a wardrobe doesn't, so it suits a room with a built-in closet. A double (full) bed leaves more floor on each side.
What size is an average bedroom?
There's no single figure. In many European flats a main bedroom is about 12 to 16 m² (130 to 170 sq ft), with second bedrooms from about 8 m². In US houses a main bedroom is often 12 × 14 ft or more and other bedrooms around 10 × 10 to 11 × 12 ft. What matters is the furniture: type your room in and see.
How much space do I need around a bed?
About 60 cm (2 ft) on each side you get in from, and the same at the foot if you walk past it; 75 cm (2½ ft) is comfortable. A wardrobe needs its own depth, about 60 cm, plus room to open the doors. That's why a 3 × 3 m room takes a double bed but not a double bed and a wardrobe.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Divide by 10.764: 144 sq ft is 13.4 m². To go the other way, multiply by 10.764: 12 m² is 129 sq ft. The tool shows the area in both so you don't have to.
