Under the rug

Layout

The front third of the sofa sits on the rug.

Recommended

Go for 200 × 300 cm.

Front legs on: the rug should reach at least 20 cm past each arm and 1.2 m in front of the sofa. 200 × 300 cm is the smallest standard size that does: 40 cm past each arm of your 2.2 m sofa and 1.68 m in front.

The short answer

The right rug size depends on how the rug sits under the furniture, not on the room. Under a sofa, the usual rule of thumb is that the rug reaches at least 20 cm (8 in) past each arm and about 1.2 m (4 ft) out in front, so a coffee table sits on it too. Under a bed, it reaches at least 40 cm (16 in) past each side and the foot, so your feet land on it when you get up.

This tool does that arithmetic for the three ways designers lay a rug: with the front legs on it, with all the legs on it, or floating just in front. It picks the smallest standard size that follows the rule (160 × 230, 200 × 300, 240 × 340 cm; 6 × 9, 8 × 10, 9 × 12 ft in the US) and shows it in a 3D room, so you see the proportions and not only the numbers.

How to use it

  1. 1

Pick what the rug goes under

A two- or three-seat sofa, or a double, queen or king bed. Your own sizes go under More options, along with the size of the room.

  2. 2

    Choose the layout

Front legs on, all legs on, or floating. The room redraws for each one, so you can compare them before you decide.

  3. 3

Read the size, then try the others

The answer is one standard size and why. Tap another size to see whether it's too small, too big for the room, or works as well.

Questions

What size rug goes under a three-seat sofa?

With the front legs on the rug, a 200 × 300 cm rug suits most three-seaters: it reaches past both arms and leaves room for a coffee table in front. In US sizes that's a 6 × 9 ft rug for a standard 84-inch sofa, with 8 × 10 ft the roomier choice. With all the legs on, go up to 240 × 340 cm (8 × 10 ft). A rug floating in front of the sofa can be 160 × 230 cm (5 × 8 ft), as long as it's at least as wide as the sofa.

What size rug goes under a queen or king bed?

Lay the rug under the lower two thirds of the bed, starting just in front of the nightstands, so it reaches at least 40 cm (16 in) past each side and the foot. For a European double that's a 200 × 300 cm rug, for a US queen a 6 × 9 ft one; a king with all its legs on the rug needs 240 × 340 cm (8 × 10 ft, since a 10 ft side across the bed clears a 76-inch king by nearly 2 ft).

Front legs on, all legs on or floating: which is best?

Front legs on is the common choice: it ties the sofa and the coffee table together without needing a huge rug. All legs on suits a big room, where the rug frames the whole seating area. Floating works when the rug is small or the sofa is against a wall with little space in front. The tool shows all three in the same room, so you can judge them.

How much floor should show around a rug?

Leave about 30 cm (12 in) of bare floor between the rug and the walls, or a bit more in a big room. A rug that runs wall to wall reads as carpet, and one that's too small makes the furniture look as if it's slipping off. The tool flags a size as too big when it leaves less than 30 cm to a wall of the room you set under More options.

What are the standard rug sizes?

In Europe, rugs are mostly sold in 120 × 170, 160 × 230, 200 × 300, 240 × 340 and 300 × 400 cm. In the US, in 5 × 8, 6 × 9, 8 × 10, 9 × 12 and 10 × 14 ft. The tool snaps its answer to these, since a rug that's 10 cm too short for the rule is rarely worth passing over if the next size up doesn't fit your room.

Can I see the rug in my actual room?

Yes. Upload your floor plan and UploadFloorplan turns it into a 3D room with its walls, doors and windows. Drag the sofa, the bed and the rug in at their real sizes and see how they sit together. A free account is enough.
